About this Project

LKB was retained by Nassau County Department of Public Works to complete the design and provide construction management and construction inspection services for West Shore Road Seawall in a three phased construction contract. Located in Mill Neck, NY, this 2 mile long seawall, a combination of steel sheeting and precast concrete blocks, replaced the deteriorated wall.

The seawall runs along the westerly shore line of Oyster Bay Harbor. This body of water is an environmentally sensitive wildlife preserve under the jurisdiction of the US Fish & Wildlife Services, where the mean high water forms its westerly boundary line. Restricted encroachment onto the Fish & Wildlife area forced the construction of the wall to be done upland from the roadside, requiring an extended complete closure of West Shore Road. This corridor provides the main access to neighboring communities of Bayville and Center Island as well as local residences. To minimize impact on the local communities, three phases of construction contacts were utilized.

Overhead utilities were placed underground to provide safety clearance for the construction equipment, and new drainage collections and treatment system were installed. Permits were obtained from the NYSDEC, the Army Corps of Engineers and the US Fish & Wild Life Services.

Phase 1 of this three phase project received the 2013 Project of the Year Award from the New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE) – Nassau Chapter.
