Byron lake- Environnmental Engineering & Structural Engineering

About this Project

LKB has been retained by the Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs to provide various engineering services under an on-call contract. Under this task order, LKB is providing environmental engineering, structural engineering, construction support services and construction administration services for the rehabilitation of the man-made lake at Byron Lake Park, in Oakdale, NY.

Environmental engineering services included field investigation of existing water quality conditions to determine the cause(s) of the overgrowth of aquatic vegetation, a hydrologic study and piezometer to determine the sources of water to the lake, a records review to identify potential sources of nutrient loading to the lake, development of a water quality improvement plan to mitigate excessive nutrient loading, and preparation of the environmental permit application package for the structural improvements.

Structural engineering services included field investigation of the condition of the 1,400 feet of existing bulkhead, which surrounds the entire lake as well as an island in the lake, and the weir at the end of the lake, geotechnical borings to determine subsurface soil characteristics, design of a cantilever FRP bulkhead, a new state-of-the-art adjustable weir system, a grading plan for the lake banks, and design of a replacement culvert apron for an inlet to the lake. LKB also prepared the plans, specifications and bid package for the construction contract, and obtained the necessary permits from the NYSDEC.

LKB is currently providing engineering construction support including shop drawing review and will provide part-time construction administration services for the construction work.
