LKB was retained by Nassau County Department of Public Works to perform design and construction support services for this project. The work entailed the replacement of 2,850 linear feet of bulkhead located within an active marina and park facility that includes swimming pools, ball fields and picnic areas. The deteriorated timber bulkhead was partially removed, and new composite sheet piling was installed in front of the remaining bulkhead. The new bulkhead was connected to the existing deadman system with tiebacks and an integrally poured-in-place concrete pile cap was installed. New asphalt walkways, curbs and railings (attached to the pile cap) were constructed along the perimeter of the bulkhead. Utility upgrades included replacement of the lighting system and new electrical and water services to the floating docks. The construction was performed in phases during the off season in order to accommodate boaters and ensure the marina was operational at the start of the boating season.
Upon acceptance of the contract documents, LKB provided services during the bidding phase, which included responding to inquiries from prospective bidders; review of contractors’ qualifications and references; preparation of a bid summary; and recommendation of the award to the lowest responsible and qualified bidder. LKB’s construction support services during the construction phase included review and approval of detailed shop drawings, catalog cuts, and miscellaneous submittals for compliance with contract documents; review and responses to RFI’s (Request for Information) and Change Order Requests; and attendance of progress and project meetings, as necessary.
In addition to design of the bulkhead, the engineering services included providing a topographical survey, subsurface investigations, electrical service inspection, bulkhead and concrete deadman tieback inspections, permitting, and construction support services and construction inspection services.
