LKB was retained by Nassau County Department Public Works to provide construction management services on the construction of this new museum and IMAX Theater. Construction features included 4,500 cubic yards of structural concrete, 1,000,000 pounds of structural steel and 7,500 square feet of glass curtain wall. The museum and theater provides the Long Island Region with the largest, year-round cultural facility and is one of the largest theaters in North America. The complex included a new 85,000-square-foot Visitors Center which features the 325-seat theater in a high wrap-around dome, along with a futuristic “Red Planet Café”, a glass atrium, Museum Shop and Wall of Honor Gallery. The Aviation Museum houses one of the world’s finest collections of aircraft and spacecraft, representing all key periods in aerospace history. This project received multiple awards, including 2002 Project of The Year by ASCE, Long Island Chapter; 2002 Project of The Year by NYSSPE, Nassau Chapter; and the 1999 Roger Corbella Award by the Concrete Industry Board.
