About this Project

LKB was retained by NYS Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation to provide the design for a new water supply and treatment system for this historic fish hatchery which was shut down by the NYSDEC after a massive fry die-off was traced to the virus Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN) in the hatchery’s supply water from the Connetquot River. LKB performed an evaluation of the existing hatchery components and requirements, and designed a new, virus-free, state-of-the-art 140-GPM groundwater-based water supply system for the hatchery, complete with a CO2 removal system, automatic controls with auto-dialer, and an LNG-fired gen-set backup power supply. The work included survey and mapping, soil borings and installation of a test well, wetland delineation, inspection of the existing hatchery, and a study to determine the size and capacity needs for a new hatchery. The well design included design of a pump, supply piping, electrical service, design of an emergency generator and preparation of a well permit and SPDES permit.

LKB designed and permitted the new system, prepared bid documents, reviewed contractor bids, provided construction oversight and budgeting services, oversaw a 24-hour performance test of the new well, and prepared a final report for the new system. The hatchery was returned to service in 2017, and LKB provided technical expertise to ensure its successful operation.
