VERTEX is part of the design team which is providing design, construction documents, and construction-phase services for the new $87 million-dollar, 3-story Natick Kennedy Middle School project. VERTEX is the civil engineer and is providing utility design and permitting services.
The initial stages of the project included the evaluation of multiple sites throughout the Town to determine where the new school should be located. These investigations included buildable area, permitting requirements, and availability of utilities.
VERTEX’s effort for the project consists of site design including drainage and utilities, sanitary sewer, water distribution, layout; cut and fill analysis; field design; permitting; and construction services. The school will be built on the site of the existing middle school. As such, coordination with the Town is required for tie-in to the existing roadways for access and utilities, and constructability assessment to maintain ongoing school operations during construction.
The new facility will receive LEED certification. The goal for the project is LEED Gold. As part of the design, VERTEX coordinated the traffic impact analysis including a capacity analysis and evaluation of pedestrian safety on and around the project site. Based on the results of the study, VERTEX designed off-site improvements to an adjacent roadway to accommodate turning movements.
VERTEX also is involved in the design of a new synthetic turf multi-use field for the school athletics program. Field design includes the evaluation of various turf and infill type to assist the Town in getting the best use out of the facility.
During construction, VERTEX will provide Construction Administration services including Shop Drawing review, RFI response, and review of the contractor pay requisitions. The school is scheduled to open in 2022.
