Shahnaz Karim

Electrical Engineer, Electrical

Shahnaz Karim is a proud member of the MEP department here at LKB and plays an integral role as an electrical engineer and project manager. Shahnaz has 20 years of comprehensive experience in the field of electrical engineering with an emphasis in electrical design. Her design experience extends to power distribution, load calculation, load analysis and short circuit analysis, emergency power calculations, generator sizing, voltage drop calculations, lighting design, electrical equipment sizing, fire alarm design, and schematic drawing. Her experience compounds each year as LKB provides a wide variety of engineering services to projects that she has high involvement with.

Shahnaz recently completed the design relocation/rehabilitation project of the Atlantic Beach Bridge Unit Substation for the Nassau County Bridge Authority. Ms. Karim assisted in the design of the continuous operation via an existing backup service provided by PSE&G. She also completed the installation of a new medium voltage service and transformer for the complete Evaluation of the town of North Hempstead SWMA Transfer Station. Her expertise travel through hospitals, schools, buildings, parks, landfills, data centers, tunnels, and bridges. Shahnaz enjoys the uniqueness that each project brings, and the knowledge that can be added to future projects; the learning never ends.

Currently, Shahnaz is the electrical engineer on a City of Yonkers project, Athletic Fields at Yonkers Landfill. The electrical scope of this athletic field project includes converting the landfill area to an athletic field requiring complete electrical survey of the landfill and parking lot area. The electrical design consists of solar lighting for the parking lot area and sports lighting fed via a new utility service for the landfill area.

Why electrical Engineering? Shahnaz’s father was a Aerospace engineer. With deep encouragement, he promoted the importance of math and science courses as a high school student leading her to STEM programs. It is through STEM programs that she developed an interest in electrical engineering. Shahnaz can broaden her engineering reach here at LKB while providing the balance of career and family. She values the flexibility that is offered and the understanding of employee’s needs.

Belief: As quoted by Shahnaz, “My role as an engineer is about ethics, knowledge, and willingness to learn new skills. As a project manager at LKB, the role I play in writing the proposal to completion of the job is crucial. It involves a good relationship with the clients, consultants, and contractors and above all, making every effort to complete the job in a timely fashion within the established budget.”

Outside of work, Shahnaz works with high school students and NY Blood Centers organizing blood drives in Long Island. She finds this to be a very rewarding experience.

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and biking in the Massapequa preserve.
