Jones Beach State Park Sewage Treatment Plant Improvements

LKB has provided engineering services for multiple improvement projects at the Jones Beach State Park Sewage Treatment Plant. Under a task order contract with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP), LKB designed a new wet pit pump station and 12-inch diameter, 3.2-mile long force-main to accept up to 1,750 GPM of treated effluent from the Jones Beach State Park Sewage Treatment Plant. The force-main was connected to the existing ocean outfall for the Nassau County Department of Public Works (DPW) Cedar Creek Treatment Plant. LKB reviewed as-built plans, identified any underground utility conflicts, and advised the client to select a triplex pump arrangement. The triplex pump station included two smaller pumps to accommodate average flows, and 1 larger pump to accommodate peak pressures which could occur in the ocean outfall under high tides and storm events. LKB’s services included coordination with Nassau County DPW, wetlands permitting, surveying, design, and liaison to the NYSDEC regarding flow velocities and odor control measures. LKB also provided engineering support services during construction. All work had to avoid impacts with ongoing NYSOPRHP operations at the sewage treatment plant, park facilities, and adjacent wetlands. LKB provided all project management, planning, design, bid phase, and engineering support during construction. LKB assisted the NYSOPRHP in-house staff during construction inspection on an as-needed basis.

LKB was also retained for a separate project at the Jones Beach State Park Sewage Treatment Plant to prepare design plans for the upgrade of the 2.5 MGD facility. This work included preparation of a design report to identify deficiencies in the plant, and measures to correct those deficiencies. The report formed the basis for the design plans which included structural and interior coating refurbishment of the trickling filters, valve replacement, replacement of filter media, installation of new bar screens, and improvements to the chlorine mixing system. Work included coordinating with the NYSDEC, operations personnel and performing shop drawing review.
