About this Project

LKB was responsible for the design of this Design-Build project for a 5MVA, 34.5kV to 13.2kV, Engineer Procure Construct substation. Design services included electrical, structural and civil engineering for the detailed design of the substation.
The scope of work included a replacement 34.5kV-12.47kV outdoor substation. LKB designed the one line and three-line diagrams, protective relaying and control schemes, panel & control layout, panel wiring, and interconnection diagrams. We also prepared the annunciator front view and control schematic diagram, and reviewed contractors and manufacturers’ submittals.
Civil, structural and geotechnical components included foundations and structural steel for a control house and various electrical equipment, site grading and drainage, site access roadways, fencing, oil containment and associated site details. Work included design of structural elements such as steel support equipment, structures, concrete foundations for electrical equipment. In addition, LKB incorporated two additional gates and performed a traffic turning radius study to ensure that a tractor trailer could access the site through the new gate. This required revising the layout of stone driveway. LKB also revised the grading plan to accommodate the new driveway and gate and to provide a swale along the easterly perimeter of the site to control stormwater. Two pipe culverts were provided at the driveway to carry the stormwater flow to the other side of the substation. Lightening masts were added to the project which caused steel heights to increase at the take off structure, service station stand, and BT supports and required revisions to the steel and foundation designs.
